| April-12-99 (updated 11:50pm) | Final week of spring training. |
The Saturday practice we'll probably have some beer and dogs at the diamond afterwards (or else move it over to Malloy's house).
Notice I've added two names to this email list, Jeff F. and Harold W., who will be playing with us this season. Jeff's a friend of Dale, and Harold is one of mine from the Fire Department.
New Links sited
Got a new reciprocal link to our site (a banner link, no less) from the guys at
Slammin' Slo-Pitch from Toronto. Whilst
surfing around over there, I found that Big Vic
linked to us, as did another bat review site which I can't seem to find again, or I'd post the link.
| April-4-99 (updated 8:48pm) | More practices this week. |
Tournament?
We're thinking seriously about playing the NSA tournament at Heartland, Michigan the
weekend of April 17th. If you want to play, you must commit to the whole
weekend/tournament...not just a few hours here and there.
Reciprocal Link sitings
The National Softball Association (NSA), which we have joined this year,
has added our site to their links page. Also we're looking
for a reciprocal link from Team MVP in the near future.
Team email address is dead
cisoftball@usa.net is now offically dead. The email page now forwards
team mail to a temporary account I just set up at ic.net.
| April-1-99 (updated 4:41pm) | Lions schedule released today. |
From: LionsTix - for Season ticket holders onlySubject: 1999 Detroit Lions Schedule Date: Thu, 1 Apr 1999 16:28:23 -0500 X-Priority: 3 MIME-Version: 1.0 X-Mailer: Internet Mail Service (5.0.1457.3) Content-Type: text/plain; charset="iso-8859-1" X-UIDL: 5ac1089a11e02083df991248ccb9bf09 FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE APRIL 1, 1999 LIONS ANNOUNCE 1999 SCHEDULE PONTIAC, MICH. -- The Detroit Lions open their 1999 schedule with a September 12 road meeting against the Seattle Seahawks at The Kingdome and begin the '99 home slate facing the division rival Green Bay Packers a week later at the Pontiac Silverdome. The Lions have three nationally televised games, with all of them being played in the Silverdome and falling on major national holidays. The first such outing comes with an ESPN Sunday night tilt with Tampa Bay on Halloween. That game is followed by a matchup with Chicago in the team's annual Thanksgiving Day (November 25) series on Fox and a Saturday afternoon outing on Christmas Day facing the two-time defending Super Bowl champion Denver Broncos on CBS. "I see this being a very fair schedule," said Lions Head Coach BOBBY ROSS. "The only two long road trips we have -- to Seattle in the opener and at Arizona on November 14 -- are both day games and are both followed by either a home game or a short road trip the next week. I also like the fact that we play every divisional team at home before traveling to their respective stadiums. "And with the three nationally televised holiday games we certainly will be getting our share of exposure. We had two good wins on ESPN Sunday night games last year, and have played very well on Thanksgiving Day in my two years here, which even adds more to what is a very special day for everyone in and around the state of Michigan and within the Lions' organization. The Christmas Day game against Denver also will be a matchup fans all across the country will look forward to watching." Besides the three nationally televised home games, the remaining five home outings in 1999 will start at 1:00 p.m. (Green Bay, San Diego, Minnesota, St. Louis and Washington). The home opener with Green Bay marks the first time the Packers have opened Detroit's home slate since 1991 (23-14 Lions' win). Both Tampa Bay and Chicago played prime time games in Detroit last year, with the Lions defeating the Buccaneers on a Monday night, 27-6, (September 28), and beating the Bears, 26-3, on an ESPN Sunday night telecast (November 15). Among other highlights of this year's schedule will be the Lions' first-ever matchup with the Carolina Panthers -- on October 24 at Charlotte's Erickson Stadium, and Detroit's first trip to both Seattle and Kansas City since 1990. Also, the San Diego Chargers make their first visit to the Silverdome since 1978 and Washington and St. Louis both will make a relatively rare appearance in Detroit -- with the Redskins last trip in 1990 and the Rams in 1991. 1999 Detroit Lions season ticket inquiries can be made by contacting a Lions' ticket representative at 800/616-ROAR. If you don't reply to my messages regarding meetings, practices, game times, etc., we have no idea if you got the message. This causes LaRue to have to call you...usually days later than necessary. Email actually becomes counter-productive.
As a former Manager, I can assure you that softball calls can be very time consuming. IMO, it's the worst part of managing a team. 10-15 softball calls can consume most of an evening.
You guys can help a lot by simply replying to the email. One word answers are fine...at least we'll know you got the message.
Other stuff
Our cisoftball(at)usa.net general email address is going away soon, since Netaddress decided to start charging for it in April. I might set up another one elsewhere when the time comes.
Okay, call me an idiot but I don't recall ever even hearing of the NSA before today. But obviously they exist or they wouldn't have a website, nor would they have posted this rulebook. Please have a look at both of these.
| March-9-99 (updated 8:58pm) | Winter Meeting rescheduled again. |
March 20th MR Sports, 12mile/Northwestern 7:30PM.
Lucky for you guys who has stuff come up last saturday, now you can make it, right?
| March-7-99 (updated 11:13pm) | Winter Meeting Postponed again due to Snowstorm |
| Feb-21-99 (updated 2:32pm) | Softball City bound. |
Our meeting is still set for March 6th at Mr. Sports in Southfield. Just about everyone said they plan on being there, so I guess we'll see how serious everyone is about their softball commitments in two weeks.
Detroit Lions 1999 Schedule
No dates or times announced yet, but the opponents are set,
according to the season ticket holder info I found stuffed in
with my invoice today. Here it is:
PRESEASON HOME: Cincinnati, St. Louis
PRESEASON AWAY: Miami, Atlanta
REGULAR SEASON HOME: Green Bay, Minnesota, Tampa Bay, Chicago, Denver, Washington, St. Louis, San Diego
REGULAR SEASON AWAY: Green Bay, Minnesota, Tampa Bay, Chicago, Kansas City, Carolina, Arizona
Now I'm hoping John Elway plays one more season cuz I've never seen him play live.
| Feb-15-99 (updated 7:15pm) | Winter Meeting scheduled for March 6th. BE THERE! |
I've just confirmed with LaRue that our Winter Meeting will be Saturday March 6th, 7:30PM, at Mr Sports in Southfield. It's on 12 mile Road between Telegraph and Northwestern Hwy, just a few doors east of Northwestern Hwy.
We chose Mr Sports because it's centrally located, they serve food and liquor, and last year's meeting was there and it worked out ok.
It's very important that you be there if you want to have a say in where we play, what night, what class, etc, because all of that is up in the air right now. We will probably make all those decisions at the meeting.

Please respond to this message, so we can get a head count.
Back to Softball City?
It sounds like everyone is pretty open to that idea, so we might just
be headed back there this season. Yet another reason to show up at the
meeting.
1999 Season personnel news
LaRue has attempted to contact everyone about the Spring season.
Near as I can figure, here's how it stands as of right now:
Definites
Gerry, Mike, Dale, Mark W, Malloy, Jeff G., Bill, Danny, and LaRue, have all
commited to playing this season, with the following minor issues noted:
LaRue's job with the Redwings will continue to interfer with softball night, depending on the playoff schedule. My perfect attendance record of 1998 is in jepardy for 1999. Julie is due in May, so I suspect I'll miss at least one game there. Then if Jeff G.'s experience is any indication, I will probably miss a few more games over the summer due to daycare pickup, and sheer exhaustion.
Doubtfuls
Barry D.'s situation hasn't changed, so he probably won't be making
any commitments just yet. Mark C. is working on a photographer gig with the Detroit
Redwings, in addition to his deal with the Detroit Tigers, so he's doubtful.
We've been unable to contact Jeff Ku., and judging from last year we're considering him doubtful.
Unconfirmed
We think these players will be returning but have no confirmation as yet:
Andy, Mike C.
Unknowns
Jeff Ka, Scott
Site news
It now looks like I will be keeping my ICNet account after all, so this
website will not be moving anytime soon. I'm keeping the account in addition
to my new cable modem account with @Home, so please use my new email
address for correspondances, and not my ic.net account, since I won't be
checking that one very often anymore.
| Jan-25-99 (updated 11:50am) | Meeting Update, and site news. |
Liberty Park has sent us the registration forms for the Spring season. We have not filled them out yet. We have no real roster in mind, haven't talked to our sponsor since fall, and have heard from only a couple of players asking about next season.
I'm phasing out my account with ICNet soon. It's best to contact me at my new email address now, whiotaky-at-home.com, since ICNet won't let me access their mail server from my new account anymore. On the website I've changed the email page address to "cisoftball-at-usa.net", which I can check from anywhere. The site itself will probably stay put for a little while longer, but eventually it's moving too. It just depends on how I ultimately dispose of my prepaid ICNet account, and whether it's disposed of before I'm prepared to set up a webserver at home.
Change the "-at-" to "@" in the addresses above, BTW.
| Jan-4-99 (updated 1:10pm) | No news, but I'll update anyway. |
Suffice to say it would be nice to hear from some of our players before I invest my money in golf equipment.
My TCI @Home cable modem has been installed, so my Motorola Bit Surfr Pro ISDN adapter (external) is indeed for sale. Email me if interested.
| Dec-16-98 (updated 10:43am) | Cabal Lunch Meeting today at 12:30; Combined stats online today. |
The '98 season combined stats have been compiled. This year's Golden Razor Award goes to LaRue Williams, who's all too familiar with the award, and the chaffing that goes with it :) We'll dry shave him from the neck down in April.
| Dec-1-98 (updated 10:55am) | Winter news. |
The '98 photo collection I have still hasn't turned up, so no scans yet. I'm hoping they'll turn up when I convert our den into a nursery this winter. Yes, Julie and I are expecting a new tax deduction in May. If it's a boy, I'll teach him to play infield since we're pretty lacking there lately. Anyway, I'm building a computer room in the basement to clear some room upstairs. I've ordered Cable Modem (thank God it's finally coming to Berkley), and hope to have it installed by the time the new room is ready. If so, our team website will move to a dedicated webserver in my basement. Oh, and I'll have an External Motorola BitSurfer Pro ISDN adapter available for sale very cheap :)
LaRue and I talked this week, and we've decided to have our mid-winter get-together after the holidays, some time in early January. This will be an extremely important meeting, as those who attend will probably make the decisions as to where we play next season, what classification we play, and quite possibly who will not be playing.
I hung out with former team members Barry R. and Pat McArthy on Saturday. Barry's got a new house out in Lake Orion, and Pat's still in Indianapolis and has two kids now. He says he's played ball maybe two times since moving and misses it.
Mark W. wrote me the other day, by way of his new Web TV email address (which I don't have handy, or I'd post it here). Up 'til this week I haven't heard much from any players so send me a message, especially if you have anything of interest you'd like me to post here. I plan on updating this page several times a month until the season starts.
